The main hotel building dates back to the 13th century when it was a manor house.

The village is to be found in a gentle valley at the edge of the 27 000 acre Royal Forest of Dean and The Wye Valley.

Directions:

From the south and east Take M4 towards Wales. At Junction 21 turn onto M48 for Chepstow. Go over bridge 4.60 for cars and turn off at Junction 2 signed M48 Chepstow.At the roundabout take A48 in the direction of Gloucester. Follow this road over the old bridge and take the B4228 to Coleford and The Forest of Dean. Follow this road for about 10 miles throught St Briavels and some 2 miles further on Clearwell is signposted on your left. The hotel is by the cross as you come down the hill.From the Midlands Take the M5 south at Junction 8. Take M50 to Ross on Wye and carry on A40 to Monmouth. From Monmouth take A466 for Chepstow. After 3 miles turn left at Redbrook on B4231. Go through Newland and Clearwell is 2 miles further on. The hotel is on the right by the cross.From Glouester Take A48 south towards Chepstow and after about 12 miles turn right to Lydney. Turn right opposite Tesco on to B4231 to Coleford. Two miles after Bream turn right at the T junction and then first left to Clearwell. The hotel is by the Cross as you come down the hill.From the west Take M4 twards Severn Bridge.
